Indians invite INF Elliot Johnson to Major League camp

The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has signed free agent INF ELLIOT JOHNSON to a Minor League Contract with a non-roster invitation to Major League spring training camp.

Johnson, 29, split the 2013 season between Kansas City and Atlanta, hitting .261 (24-92) with 5 doubles 2 triples, 10 RBI and 8 stolen bases as the regular second baseman for the Braves over the last five weeks of the season after being claimed off waivers from KC on August 21. The Safford, AZ native also started all four games of Atlanta's NL Division Series match-up against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The versatile switch-hitter has appeared at every position in the infield (164g-SS; 97g-2B; 14g-3B; 2g-1B) and 18 games in the outfield after beginning his career in the Tampa Bay Rays system in 2002. He debuted with the Rays in 2008, appeared in a career-high 123 games for Tampa in 2012 and was traded to Kansas City along with RHP James Shields in exchange for OF Wil Myers prior to the 2013 campaign.
