Clevinger takes another step toward return

June 7th, 2019

CLEVELAND -- The Indians have four starting pitchers on the injured list but are finally closing in on getting one of them back in the rotation.

Right-hander made his first rehab start with Triple-A Columbus on Thursday, tossing 58 pitches in two innings. He allowed four runs on three hits -- one of them a homer -- with two walks and four strikeouts.

“He touched 98 [miles per hour], which was kind of amazing,” manager Terry Francona said. “Obviously, he threw a lot of pitches in a short amount of time, but he came through it OK.”

Clevinger, recovering from a back strain, will come back to Cleveland at some point over the weekend to meet with the coaching staff about his first outing. The plan will be for him to get another rehab start on Tuesday, likely in Akron.

“He was going to work out there and come here soon so we can get our eyes on him,” Francona said. “And we’ll want to visit with him to see, to get his take on it, but he came through it healthy, and that’s the good news.”

Kluber to get six-week checkup

Corey Kluber, who fractured his right ulna after he was struck by a line drive on May 1, will be re-evaluated at some point next week.

Kluber's cast was removed on May 23 in exchange for a removable splint. He has been able to work out the lower half of his body, but the Indians have not been able to set a specific time frame for his return. Next week’s evaluation could provide a little more insight on how long Kluber will need before he will be back on the mound.
