Pair of Indians seeking boost for All-Star trip

Reynolds, Santana rank third in voting at their positions in latest AL tally

DETROIT -- Mark Reynolds is listed on the All-Star ballot among the American League's designated hitters, but he has been much more for the Indians.

Reynolds has filled in as Cleveland's third baseman of late and he has split the rest of his playing time between first base and DH, providing the Tribe with a versatile slugger. At the plate, Reynolds has been Cleveand's top run producer through the first two-plus months, making it no surprise that he is garnering attention in the All-Star balloting.

"I think he's actually enjoying it a lot," Indians manager Terry Francona said recently about Reynolds moving to third base. "Anything we've asked him to do, it seems like he enjoys it. We just kind of send him out there and let him play."

In the latest American League All-Star voting update released on Saturday, Reynolds was third in voting among the league's DHs with his name on 622,977 ballots. The gap between the top DH vote-getter, Boston's David Ortiz (1.7 million votes), was considerable, but Reynolds is undoubtedly deserving of consideration. Texas' Lance Berkman came in at second with 957,618 tallies.

Indians catcher Carlos Santana was also ranked third in voting at his position.

Other players listed on the All-Star ballot for the Indians include first baseman Nick Swisher, second baseman Jason Kipnis, shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, left fielder Michael Brantley, center fielder Michael Bourn and right fielder Drew Stubbs. Third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall is also listed, but he is currently with Triple-A Columbus.

Reynolds has been in a bit of a slump of late, but he has still hit .243 with a team-leading 13 home runs and 41 RBIs in 59 games.

Santana -- trailing Twins catcher Joe Mauer (1.4 million votes) and Orioles catcher Matt Wieters (1.1 million) in balloting -- was batting .279 with eight home runs, 14 doubles, 33 runs and 34 walks through 56 games. Santana had received 723,119 votes to date in the AL All-Star voting.
