SEATTLE -- Former All-Star center fielder Mike Cameron has been chosen to represent the Mariners at the First-Year Player Draft, which will be held June 4-6 in Secaucus, N.J.
Cameron ended a 17-year Major League career after last season, then officially retired as a Mariner by signing a one-day "employment agreement" with Seattle in April after throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at Safeco Field's Opening Day.
Cameron, 39, will be joined by Mariners area scout Brian Nichols at this year's Draft, in which Seattle has the third selection in the first round. They'll get word there from general manager Jack Zduriencik and the Mariners' scouting department, which will be making the selections from Safeco Field headquarters in Seattle.
Each team is represented in New Jersey by a former player or team official.
Cameron played with the Mariners from 2000-03 and earned his one All-Star berth (2001) and two of his three Gold Gloves ('01 and '03) while with Seattle.
Upon his official retirement as a Mariner, he noted how special the Mariners were among the eight teams he played for from 1995-2011.
"This is probably the one place I feel like is home for me," said the Georgia native. "I feel like it's a place where, it's a long way from home for me, but it's also been a special home for me. I felt like it was only fitting for me to slide my way into the Mariner family for the rest of my life."
