Seattle's top prospects to pitch in Futures Game

SEATTLE -- Danny Hultzen and Taijuan Walker, the Mariners' two premier pitching prospects, have been selected to participate in the 14th annual Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game, that will be played Sunday, July 8 in Kansas City's Kauffman Stadium.

Hultzen and Walker will be among the 10 pitchers on the U.S. team for the game, which features top Minor League prospects from U.S. and World teams competing as part of All-Star Sunday festivities.

It will be the first Futures Game appearance for both youngsters. Alex Liddi and James Paxton represented the Mariners in last year's contest.

Additionally, Jim Pankovits, the manager of the Mariners' Double-A affiliate Jackson Generals, has been named a coach for the U.S. Team. Pankovits is in his second year managing Jackson, who won the Southern League North first-half title with a 42-28 record.

Hultzen, 22, was the second overall pick in the first round of last year's First-Year Player Draft. The left-hander from the University of Virginia started in the Double-A Southern League All-Star game and pitched a scoreless inning with no hits and one walk.

The Mariners promoted him to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday and he's scheduled to make his Rainiers debut on Saturday at Colorado Springs. Hultzen went 8-3 with a 1.19 ERA in 13 starts for Double-A Jackson, in his first professional season before his promotion. Opposing batters hit just .151 against him with 79 strikeouts and 32 walks in 75 1/3 innings.

Walker, 19, was also named a Southern League All-Star after going 4-3 with a 3.79 ERA in the first half. The young right-hander was Seattle's top Draft pick in 2010, a first-round supplemental choice (43rd overall) out of Yucaipa (Calif.) High School.

He was the Mariners Minor League Pitcher of the Year last season after going 6-5 with a 2.89 ERA in 16 starts for Class A Clinton, posting 113 strikeouts in 96 2/3 innings.

Hultzen was the No. 16 player on's Top 100 prospect list heading into this season, with Walker 18th.

The Futures Game can be seen live on MLB.TV, ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD and followed live on's Gameday on July 8 at 2 p.m. PT. In addition, XM Radio will broadcast play-by-play coverage of the event live on MLB Network Radio XM 89. will also provide complete coverage before, during and after the game.
