King Felix leads Mariners' GIBBY contingent

SEATTLE -- Given their excellence in pitching and defense, it's not surprising that most of the seven Mariners nominees for 2012 Greatness in Baseball Yearly (GIBBY) Awards involve that side of the ball.

When you throw a perfect game, that's a good place to start for a GIBBY nomination, so rest assured that Felix Hernandez is one of the finalists for Top Pitching Performance in the annual awards show.

Hernandez, in fact, is a finalist for two GIBBY awards, having also been nominated for Starting Pitcher of the Year honors in the wake of his 13-9 season with a 3.06 ERA in 232 innings.

The Mariners' combined no-hitter is also a finalist in the Top Pitching Performance category, with the six-man contingent of Kevin Millwood, Charlie Furbush, Stephen Pryor, Lucas Luetge, Brandon League and Tom Wilhelmsen having thrown the third no-no in franchise history on June 8 in a 1-0 victory over the Dodgers.

Hernandez tossed his perfect game two months later, mowing down 27 straight Rays on Aug. 15 at Safeco Field in another 1-0 win.

Wilhelmsen is also a GIBBY nominee for Breakout Player of the Year honors after posting 29 saves and a 2.50 ERA following his midseason promotion to Seattle's closer role, while shortstop Brendan Ryan is a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year.

Ryan is also nominated in a second category for Must C Play of the Year for his defensive gem on a ground ball by Dee Gordon in the top of the ninth that preserved the combined no-hitter against the Dodgers.

The Mariners also have a nominee in one of the offbeat GIBBY categories -- a video of a young Mariners fan being surprisingly reunited with his dad dressed as an umpire is a finalist for Cut4 Topic of the Year.

Major League Baseball's A-listers will take home 2012 GIBBYs trophies -- the ultimate honors of the sport's awards season -- based on votes by media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni, fans at and the Society for American Baseball Research.

This year's GIBBY Awards feature nominees in 21 categories. Individual honors will go to the MLB MVP, in addition to the year's best starting pitcher, hitter, closer, setup man, rookie, breakout hitter, breakout pitcher, comeback player, defensive player, manager, executive and postseason performer.

GIBBY trophies also will be awarded for the year's top play, storyline, hitting performance, pitching performance, oddity, walk-off, Cut4 topic and postseason moment, from's Must C highlight reels.

In the past four years, fans have cast more than 40 million votes across the various GIBBYs categories, none of which were restricted to individual League affiliation.

You can vote as many times as you want until fan balloting closes Sunday, Dec. 2, at 9:59 p.m. PT.

Winners will be presented their GIBBY trophies at the Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards extravaganza during the Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tenn., on Tuesday, Dec. 4.
