Vogey blasts 3-run HRs in back-to-back frames

SEATTLE -- had been in a 2-for-12 funk since playing in his first All-Star Game when he entered Friday’s series opener against the Angels, but he got back in the green in a big way.

Vogelbach crushed a pair of three-run homers deep into right-center field off right-hander Jaime Barria during the Mariners' 10-0 win. His fourth-inning shot went 414 feet, and his fifth-inning blast went 441 feet according to Statcast.

“They all count the same,” Vogelbach said. “It doesn't matter how far they go. They all count the same.”

He now has 23 homers this season, tied for sixth-most in the American League. He had an opportunity for a three-run homer hat trick one inning later in the sixth against Trevor Cahill, after J.P. Crawford doubled and Domingo Santana singled.

Vogelbach punched a 3-1 sinker to the warning track in left that, had it cleared the fence, would’ve broken the Mariners’ record of eight RBIs in a single game, held by Mike Cameron, Mike Blowers and Alvin Davis.

“I was just trying to do what I do always [do] and hit a ball over the plate and hit a barrel,” Vogelbach said, insisting that he wasn’t objectively attempting to go deep.

After quietly blossoming into one of the American League’s most disciplined -- and powerful -- hitters during the first half, Vogelbach had just two singles and four strikeouts in his first dozen at-bats out of the break.

“It's baseball. It's not easy,” Vogelbach said. “Pitchers are good, and, you know, sometimes things just don't go your way. I feel like we've definitely been frustrated with how things have been going.”

Vogelbach has been one of Seattle’s most significant offensive catalysts, particularly after the club traded slugger Jay Bruce to the Phillies on June 2 and Edwin Encarnacion to the Yankees on June 15.

The Mariners are hitting .242 since Bruce was traded, second-lowest in the Majors, with a .758 OPS, which is 11th-worst. In that stretch, as Vogelbach has been relied on to become a primary run producer, he’s hit .236 with a .746 OPS, compared to a .241 average and .922 OPS prior.
