SEATTLE -- Rookie first baseman Evan White was removed from the Mariners’ game against the Dodgers in the third inning Wednesday night after fouling a ball off his left knee in his second at-bat of the game.

White, the Mariners’ No. 5 prospect and the No. 60 overall prospect, per MLB Pipeline, dropped to the ground after driving a 2-2 sinker from Danny Santana directly off his knee. He then was walked off the field at T-Mobile Park by head athletic trainer Rob Nodine. The Mariners reported that X-rays on White’s knee were negative and he’ll be listed as day to day.

“He’s got a deep bone bruise,” manager Scott Servais said. “He got treatment, and he actually feels better already. But he's going to be stiff for a couple days. There's no question about that, but we just take it day to day right now.”

Shed Long Jr. finished out White’s at-bat by drawing a walk and then stayed in the game at second base. Starting second baseman Dylan Moore shifted to first base.

Moore has started two games at first base this season but has played primarily in right field. Daniel Vogelbach, who split time at first base and designated hitter last season, was designated for assignment before the game after hitting just .094 in 53 at-bats strictly at DH this season.

White, who made the jump straight from Double-A ball to the Majors this year, has hit just .133 in his first 25 games (11-for-83), but has been a defensive standout at first base and was starting to come around at the plate, with three home runs in his last four games entering Wednesday.

The 24-year-old, the Mariners’ 2017 first-round Draft pick, signed a six-year, $24 million extension with the Mariners last December before he ever played a game in the big leagues and is expected to be a major part of the club’s rebuilding process.
