Seager activated from injured list for '19 debut

The Mariners activated third baseman from his rehab assignment at Triple-A Tacoma and reinstated him from the 60-day injured list before Saturday's game against the A's in Oakland. The club also optioned infielder Dylan Moore to Tacoma and transferred right-hander Sam Tuivailala to the 60-day injured list.

Seager (No. 15) will be in uniform and available for Saturday's 1:07 p.m. PT game. The Mariners' Major League 40-man roster remains full at 40 players.

Seager, 31, injured the extensor tendon in his left hand in a spring training game on March 8 vs. the Chicago Cubs. He underwent surgery (performed by Dr. Donald Sheridan, an orthopedic surgeon and hand specialist) in Scottsdale, Arizona, on March 12. He was placed on the 10-day IL on March 18, and transferred to the 60-day IL on March 30. This was the first IL placement if his career. Seager began a rehabilitation assignment at Tacoma on May 13. In 9 games with the Rainiers, Seager hit .256 (10-for-39) with 2 doubles and 7 RBI. At the time of his injury this spring Seager was hitting .318 (7-for-22) with 2 doubles and an RBI in 9 Spring Training games with a .375 on-base percentage and a .409 slugging mark.

Seager hit .221 (129-for-583) with 36 doubles, 22 home runs and 78 RBI in 155 games with Seattle in 2018. He’s recorded 30+ doubles in 6 of his 7 full Major League seasons and has hit at least 20 home runs in each of his last 7 years. Overall, he’s hit .258 with 249 doubles, 12 triples, 175 home runs and 603 RBI in his big league career since debuting in 2011. Seager was the Mariners 3rd-round selection in the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Moore, 26, appeared in 1 game with the Mariners after being reinstated from the 10-day injured list on May 21. Overall this season, he is batting .212 (11-for-52) with 7 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 home runs, 5 RBI, 5 walks and 2 stolen bases in 29 games with the Mariners. He was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 10 with a right wrist contusion. He appeared in 3 games on a rehabilitation assignment with Tacoma.

Moore signed with Seattle as a free agent on November 9, 2018. He was originally drafted by Texas in the 7th round of the 2015 MLB Draft. In 5 minor league seasons with Texas (2015-16), Atlanta (2016-17), Milwaukee (2018) and Seattle (2019), he is batting .260 (398-for-1531) with 237 runs scored, 96 doubles, 13 triples, 42 home runs and 204 RBI in 443 career games.

Tuivailala, 26, began the year on the Injured List recovering from surgery to repair a ruptured right Achilles tendon. He suffered the original injury on Aug. 8, 2018 at Texas and underwent surgery to repair the tendon Aug. 15, 2018. He was placed on the 10-day IL on March 18. Tuivailala began a rehabilitation assignment on May 2 at A Modesto. He appeared in 6 games with the Nuts (0-1, 1.50) prior to being transferred to AAA Tacoma on May 18. He’s appeared in 2 games with the Rainiers and has not recorded a decision (one ER, two IP).

Tuivailala (pronounced “too-ee-vai-lull-lah”), 26, was acquired by the Mariners in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Seth Elledge on July 27, 2018. In parts of four Major League seasons (2014-current), he is 7-7, 3.55 (41 ER, 104.0 IP) in 101 relief appearances. Sam was the Cardinals third round selection in the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Tuivailala was converted from shortstop to pitcher in 2012 and made the jump from rookie ball to the Majors in just 87 appearances, debuting vs. the Reds on Sept. 9, 2014.
