Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the Mariners have acquired first baseman Carlos Santana and shortstop J.P. Crawford from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for infielder Jean Segura, right-handed pitcher Juan Nicasio and left-handed pitcher James Pazos. 
"Carlos Santana has been among the most durable players in the Big Leagues over the last 8 years and has been a fixture in the middle of lineups during that time," Dipoto said. "He gets on base, he does damage at the plate and is quite an underrated 1st baseman. J.P. Crawford gives us a young shortstop, who is very athletic and fills up the tool box; he hits, he runs, he plays defense, he throws, he has power. For the last 4 years running, he's been among the top-20 prospects in baseball."
Santana, 32, appeared in 161 games with the Phillies in 2018, batting .229 (128x560) with 82 runs scored, 28 doubles, 2 triples, 24 home runs, 86 RBI, 110 walks and 2 stolen bases. The 5-foot-10, 210-pound, switch-hitter was 1 of 7 National League players to appear in at least 161 games last season, while also ranking 2nd in the league in walks and T14th in times on base (239). Santana is the only Major League player to record at least 18 home runs, 70 RBI and 85 walks in each of the 8 seasons (2011-2018). 
In 2017 with Cleveland, Santana was the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year at first base and a Rawlings® Gold Glove finalist at the position, committing only 5 errors in 1,155 total chances (.996 fielding percentage). Over the past 8 seasons (2011-18), Santana has appeared in the 3rd-most games (1,231) among all Major League players and ranks 2nd in walks (799) over that span, trailing only Joey Votto (879). He has finished in the top-5 in his respective league in walks in each of those 8 years. Prior to moving to the National League in 2018, Santana ranked among the top-10 American League players in on-base percentage in 2 of the last 6 seasons (2013 & 2016).
A native of the Dominican Republic, Santana was originally signed as an amateur free agent by the Los Angeles Dodgers in August of 2004 before being traded to the Indians in July of 2008. In 1,277 Major League games with the Indians (2010-17) and Phillies (2018), Santana has batted .247 (1123x4554) with 264 doubles, 198 home runs, 673 RBI, 836 walks and an .805 OPS. Santana represented the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic in both 2013 and 2017, combining to bat .292 (14x48) with 7 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 home runs and 6 RBI in 14 games. 
Crawford, 23 (turns 24 on Jan. 11), entered the 2018 season as the top prospect in the Phillies minor league system as well as the No. 16 overall prospect in baseball, according to Baseball America. Crawford has been ranked among the Phillies top-3 prospects by Baseball America since making his pro debut in 2013 (No. 3) and has been the club's No. 1 prospect since 2014. The 6-foot-2, 199-pound shortstop appeared in 49 games with the Phillies in 2018, batting .214 (25x117) with 17 runs, 6 doubles, 3 triples, 3 home runs and 12 RBI. He was limited by two stints on the 10-day disabled list: April 29-June 6 (strained right elbow) and June 20-Aug. 10 (fractured left hand). Crawford appeared on rehab assignments with High-A Clearwater, AAA Lehigh Valley and GCL Phillies East. 
Crawford made his Major League debut with the Phillies on Sept. 5, 2017 at New York-NL after being selected from Lehigh Valley earlier that same day. From Sept. 16 through the end of the regular season, he led the National League with 14 walks. While with Lehigh Valley in 2017, he led the International League in walks (79) while also ranking T3rd in triples (6) and T4th in runs (75). Overall in 2017, he hit .243 (115x474) with 75 runs, 20 doubles, 6 triples, 15 home runs, 63 RBI, 79 walks and a .351 on-base percentage in 127 games with the IronPigs. 
Over 6 minor league seasons with the Phillies, Crawford is a career .267 (570x2135) hitter with 325 runs, 96 doubles, 18 triples, 42 home runs, 231 RBI, 327 walks and a .366 on-base percentage in 562 games. In 2014, he received the Paul Owens Award as the best player in the Phillies minor league system. He was originally selected by Philadelphia in the 1st round (16th overall) of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Lakewood (CA) High School. 
Segura, 28, hit .304 (178x586) with 91 runs, 29 doubles, 3 triples, 10 home runs, 63 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 144 games with the Mariners in 2018. On Aug. 29 at San Diego, he recorded his 1,000th career hit. 
In parts of 7 Major League seasons with Los Angeles-AL (2012), Milwaukee (2012-15), Arizona (2016) and Seattle (2017-18), Segura is a career .287 (1020x3559) hitter with 484 runs, 154 doubles, 36 triples, 64 home runs, 316 RBI and 171 stolen bases in 901 games. The native of San Juan, Dominican Republic was originally signed by the Angels as an international free agent on Jan. 22, 2007. 
Nicasio, 32, appeared in 46 games with the Mariners in 2018, posting a record of 1-6 with 19 holds, 1 save and a 6.00 ERA (28 ER, 42.0 IP) with 53 strikeouts and 5 walks. He had two stints on the disabled list: June 7-18 (10-day DL) with right knee effusion and Aug. 3-end of season (60-day DL) with right knee inflammation.
Nicasio has appeared in parts of 8 Major League seasons with Colorado (2011-14), Los Angeles-NL (2015), Pittsburgh (2016-17), Philadelphia (2017), St. Louis (2017) and Seattle (2018) after originally signing with Colorado as a non-drafted free agent on Aug. 21, 2006. He has a career mark of 38-43 with 8 saves and a 4.64 ERA (346 ER, 671.2 IP) with 622 strikeouts and 237 walks in 315 career games (82 starts).
Pazos, 27, appeared in a career-high 60 games over two stints with Seattle in 2018 (Opening Day-8/18 and 9/1-end of season), going 4-1 with a 2.88 ERA (16 ER, 50.0 IP). The 6-foot-2, 235-pound, left-handed reliever limited opponents to a .249 (47x189) average, while walking 15 and striking out 45. Earlier in the season he equaled the club record for consecutive relief appearances without a walk, set by Charlie Furbush in 2014. Pazos did not issue a walk in 26 straight outings, April 7 - June 12, a span of 22.1 innings pitched. He also had a brief stint with Triple-A Tacoma, from Aug. 19-31, making 3 relief appearances, striking out 2 and walking 1 in 3.1 scoreless innings. 
Pazos was acquired by the Mariners from New York-AL in exchange for Zack Littell (rhp) on Nov. 18, 2016. The native of Gilbert, AZ, made his Major League debut with the Yankees in 2015. In parts of 4 Major League seasons with the Yankees (2015-16) and Mariners (2017-2018), he is 9-6 with 29 holds and a 3.54 ERA (44 ER, 112.0 IP) with 116 strikeouts and 43 walks in 137 career relief appearances. Pazos was originally selected by Tampa Bay in the 40th round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft but did not sign. He was selected and signed by the Yankees out of the 13th round of the 2012 Draft out of the University of San Diego.
