SEATTLE, Wash. – Baseball America on Thursday named the Seattle Mariners as its 2022 MLB Organization of the Year.

The significance of this honor is best seen through the prestigious list of organizations who preceded us, whom we are humbled to join,” Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto said. “To be recognized for the collective performance of more than 200 players and another 150+ personnel who make up our Baseball Operations group is incredibly meaningful. We are proud of how far we’ve come and energized by the challenges that remain ahead of us.”

The Mariners went 90-72 for the second consecutive season, earning a postseason berth for the first time since 2001. Seattle is one of 6 franchises to win at least 90 games in each of the last 2 seasons (2021-22), along with the Dodgers, Astros, Yankees, Cardinals and Blue Jays.

Seattle came into the 2022 season with the #1 ranked minor league system in the Majors according to Baseball America, with several top prospects making key contributions at the Major League level as rookies.

Julio Rodríguez (#2 overall prospect pre-2022) put together a stellar rookie season, becoming the first player with 25+ home runs and 25+ stolen bases in his debut season in Major League history en route to winning the 2022 American League Rookie of the Year and AL Silver Slugger Award among several other accolades. George Kirby (#12 overall prospect) went 8-5 with a 3.39 ERA with 22 walks and 133 strikeouts across 25 starts in his debut season, leading AL rookie pitchers in fWAR (3.0), ERA (3.39) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.05). Matt Brash (#45 overall prospect) was a key contributor out of the Mariners bullpen in 2022, going 3-1 with a 2.35 ERA (8 ER, 30.2 IP) with 43 strikeouts in 34 games as a reliever after his transition to the bullpen.

Cal Raleigh was among the best catchers in the Majors, leading the position in home runs (27) and also setting a single season franchise record for most homers hit by a catcher. Third baseman Eugenio Suárez, who was acquired on March 14, 2022, led the Mariners with 31 home runs. First baseman Ty France was named an American League All-Star in 2022, finishing the season with 20 home runs and 83 RBI.

The Mariners starting rotation recorded 79 quality starts in 2022, 2^nd-most in the American League and 3^rd-most in the Majors. In his first season with the team, Robbie Ray led the pitching staff with 212 strikeouts. Logan Gilbert put together an excellent sophomore season, going 13-6 with a 3.20 ERA in 32 starts. Gilbert went 3-0 with a 0.40 ERA in 4 April starts, the lowest ERA in a month in franchise history (min. 20 IP) en route to winning AL Pitcher of the Month. Midseason acquisition Luis Castillo registered 7 quality starts for Seattle down the stretch, striking out at least 8 batters in 6 of his 11 outings. Castillo tossed 7.1 scoreless innings with no walks and 5 strikeouts in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Seattle’s bullpen led the American League in WHIP (1.08), opponent batting average (.207), hits-per-9 innings (6.72) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.22). Six relievers recorded at least 50 strikeouts, which tied a franchise record: Andres Muñoz (96), Penn Murfee (74), Paul Sewald (72), Erik Swanson (69), Matt Festa (64) and Diego Castillo (53).
