SEATTLE -- Robinson Canó's ground-rule double in the first inning Saturday was his 30th double of the season, making him one of just four players in Major League history to record 30 or more doubles in 12 or more consecutive seasons.
"Those are the kind of things you want to get off your shoulders right away," Cano said. "Even when you have the whole season. But you never know what can happen in these games."
He had been counting up to the milestone. But when he finally hit it, the Mariners were already trailing the Angels 6-2. The spiraling game put a damper on the excitement of Cano's achievement. Seattle would go on to lose, 10-3.
The three other players with 30-plus doubles in 12 straight seasons are all Hall of Famers: Stan Musial, Tris Speaker and Honus Wagner. Speaker and Wager's streaks both topped out at 12 seasons, while Musial extended his to 16. Cano is the only player to record 12 consecutive seasons of 30-plus home runs in his first 12 seasons.
"That's something that its an honor and privilege," Cano said, "but also you have to be blessed. All the things that you've been through, God's been able to keep you healthy and able to be successful at a high level."
Cano's first inning double traveled 319 feet, according to Statcast™, down the left-field line. It bounced over the fence and he trotted into second base. The fans went wild, and Cano took off his helmet and waved to celebrate his historic feat.
But that was it. Just a small acknowledgement to the fans.
"That's something that you really appreciate, something that the fans really track, and they put [the stats] on the board, and they supported me," Cano said. "You didn't see me celebrate more because we were losing, and it wasn't the right time."
