Mariners part with Lopes, Ervin via waivers

December 22nd, 2020

SEATTLE -- Versatile utility man and outfielder -- two players designated for assignment last week by the Mariners -- were claimed off waivers on Tuesday and will join new teams.

Ervin was claimed by the Cubs, and Lopes was picked up by the Brewers. Ervin had been DFA’d last Wednesday and Lopes on Friday to open spots on the Mariners’ 40-man roster for free-agent signees Keynan Middleton and Chris Flexen.

Lopes, 26, was with Seattle for two stints after being drafted by the Mariners in the sixth round in 2012. The Los Angeles native spent the first five seasons of his pro career in the Mariners’ organization before being traded to the Blue Jays in 2016 for switch-pitcher Pat Venditte.

Lopes then re-signed with Seattle as a Minor League free agent prior to the ’19 season and made his Major League debut that year while batting .270 in 41 games as a midseason callup. Though he came up as an infielder, the versatile Lopes helped fill in as a corner outfielder this past season and hit .238 with two homers and 15 RBIs in 46 games.

In two seasons for Seattle, Lopes posted a .252/.315/.362 line with three home runs and 27 RBIs in 279 plate appearances.

But the Mariners have several utility candidates, with , Donovan Walton and also on the 40-man roster. Moore likely will get a shot at the starting second-base job next season, but Haggerty and Walton are well-regarded as well and are capable of playing shortstop, which is one spot Lopes hasn’t played much in his pro career.

Ervin was a more recent addition, as he was claimed off waivers from the Reds on Sept. 3 and handled most of the right-field duties over the final month of the season. The 28-year-old hit .205 with four RBIs in 18 games for the Mariners, who wanted to get a look at the 2013 first-round Draft pick after he’d gotten off to a slow start with the Reds.

In four Major League seasons with the Reds and Mariners, Ervin hit .247 with 17 home runs and 68 RBIs in 237 games.
