Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto and Mariners Manager Scott Servais announced today that the team has hired Perry Hill as the club's new First Base/Infield Coach.
Chris Prieto, who was Mariners First Base Coach in 2018, will shift to Third Base Coach next season.
"Perry has long been considered among the finest coaches in MLB," Dipoto said. "Infield defense is his calling card, and he's achieved consistently excellent results wherever he's been. We're all looking forward to watching him work."
Hill has spent the last 6 years with the Miami Marlins as the club's Major League Infield and First Base Coach. In his pro career, he has coached Rawlings® Gold Glove winners at all four (1B, 2B, SS, 3B) infield positions.
"Perry is one of the most respected infield coaches in the game," Servais said. "I'm excited to add him to our coaching staff. He brings an impressive resume of having coached outstanding defensive seasons and Gold Glove winners."
Gold Glove winners with Hill as their coach include Dee Gordon (2B, Miami, 2015), Luis Castillo (2B, Florida, 2003-2005), Mike Lowell (3B, Florida, 2005), Derek Lee (1B, Florida, 2003) and Orlando Cabrera (SS, Montreal, 2001).
Hill has 23 years as a Major League coach, and has spent 32 years in pro ball, overall. The Marlins eight best fielding percentage seasons came while Hill was coaching, and he has led three different teams to league-best fielding percentage marks: Miami (.988 in 2018), Pittsburgh (.988 in 2009) and Detroit (.985 in 1997). In 2017, he was named Infield Coach of the Year by the MLB Network.
In addition to Miami, Hill has been a Major League coach with Texas (1992-94, 1995), Detroit (1997-99), Montreal (2000-2001) and Pittsburgh (2009).
Hill spent 13 seasons in the Texas Rangers organization, including all or parts of four seasons in the big leagues, and six seasons as the Rangers Coordinator of Minor League Instruction.
Hill played six seasons of professional baseball, spending the 1976 season with Rio Grande of the Gulf States League, and the 1977-81 seasons in the Mexican Sonora League.
Hill was a three-year letter-winner in baseball at L.D. Bell High School in Hurst, TX. He spent two years at Paris (TX) Junior College, earning all-conference honors both years. He attended the University of Texas - Pan American (Edinburg, TX) for two years and was team captain in 1974. He was inducted into the Paris JC Hall of Fame in 2014, into the Hurst/Euless/Bedford, Texas (school district) Hall of Fame in February of 2002 and the Clarinda, Iowa Hall of Fame in November of 2002.
Jerry Dipoto also announced today that Mariners third base coach Scott Brosius has informed the team that he will not return in 2019.
Brosius was invited to return in 2019, but declined.
Brosius spent the past two seasons on the Mariners Major League staff. He originally joined the big league club in 2017 as Assistant Coach after one season (2016) as the AAA Tacoma Rainiers hitting coach.
