MINNEAPOLIS -- Mariners first baseman Ryon Healy injured his right ankle in a postgame workout following Saturday's 11-4 victory over the Twins and was on crutches with a walking boot on Sunday when Seattle's final game of the series was postponed by inclement weather.
Manager Scott Servais said Healy will have an MRI on the ankle and isn't likely to play in the upcoming three-game series in Kansas City on Monday through Wednesday, though he didn't yet know the severity of Healy's injury.
The Mariners already have three starting position players on the 10-day disabled list with designated hitter Nelson Cruz sidelined by a sprained right ankle, catcher Mike Zunino out with a strained left oblique and left fielder Ben Gamel just beginning Minor League rehab games after missing more than a month with a strained right oblique.
Servais said Healy twisted his ankle doing plyometric exercises in the weight room following Saturday's game, in which he broke out of a 1-for-21 start to his season with a three-run double in the eighth inning.
"I actually talked with Ryon yesterday after the game," Servais said. "He got the big hit and felt better about some things. He went into the weight room to work out. I don't have all the details on it yet, but he twisted his ankle pretty bad doing the workout, which was nothing more than doing some plyometrics, back and forth, and rolled his ankle. I don't know how severe it is yet."
The Mariners are off to a 4-3 start despite the slate of odd injuries. Cruz sprained his ankle when slipping on the dugout stairs at Safeco Field in the second game of the season after hitting his second home run in two days. Zunino strained his oblique when taking batting practice the afternoon before Opening Day.
Gamel got hurt during Spring Training on March 2 when he strained his oblique taking swings in the batting cage.
"It's hard to even fathom the things that have happened," Servais said. "They're not getting hit by pitches and things that are common baseball injuries. These are walking down steps, workout rooms, stuff like that.
"But we'll figure it out and put other guys in there. The reports on the guys that are banged up are very positive and they keep moving in the right direction. We will eventually get a few guys back. I'm just hoping at some point we get to full strength. That may be a little farther along than I thought."
Cruz, Zunino and Gamel could all be back around the time the Mariners return home on Friday to face the A's, though there is no certainty with any of those return dates. Gamel has gone 4-for-9 with a double and stolen base in three games on a rehab assignment for Class A Advanced Modesto and will now join Triple-A Tacoma this week as it moves to warmer weather in Fresno.
Zunino and Cruz are expected to do some baseball workouts on Monday that will help determine their status.
In the meantime, Servais will need to decide whether rookie Daniel Vogelbach -- who has been filing in for Cruz at designated hitter -- takes over Healy's spot at first base or stays at DH while utility men Andrew Romine and Taylor Motter handle first.
"I have about six different lineup constructions in my pocket because the [Royals] are going right-left-left [starters] against us," Servais said. "We'll see."
