The Seattle Mariners pay tribute to the contributions Latin Americans have made to the game of baseball on Saturday, September 8, when the Mariners take on the New York Yankees. Game time is 6:10 pm. Former Mariners outfielder Franklin Gutierrez will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
The Mariners will wear jerseys with "Marineros" across the front. The letters are screen-printed with the names of the home countries of Mariners Latin American players. Select Marineros jerseys from the game will be auctioned off through Mariners Care at Section 128 on the Main Level. Additional items will be provided by Edgar Martinez and Mariners All-Star closer Edwin Diaz. The auction will benefit on-going relief efforts in Puerto Rico. Silent bidding will be available through the 6th inning.
During batting practice on Saturday, all Mariners players will wear special Hispanic Heritage Month T-shirts, part of Major League Baseball's #PonleAcento" ("Put an Accent on It") campaign, launched in 2016 to highlight the distinctive mark that Hispanic and Latino players and fans leave on the game.
Franklin Gutierrez played for the Mariners from 2009-2013 and again from 2015-2016. Gutierrez won a Gold Glove® in 2010 with a Major League record of 415 errorless chances in the outfield. He was the first Mariners player to finish a season with a 1.000 fielding percentage, and at the time was only the 5th Major Leaguer to record a perfect fielding percentage. He twice received Fielding Bible Awards (2008, 2009), which use statistical analysis to recognize the best defensive players at each position. Guti's speed and athleticism led Mariners broadcaster Dave Niehaus to nickname him "Death to Flying Things," which the Mariners celebrated in 2011 with a Franklin Gutierrez fly swatter giveaway.
The evening's festivities also include performances by the dance troupe Bailadores de Bronce and the singing of the National Anthem by Tess Altiveros, a talented soprano from Seattle who has performed extensively with Puget Sound opera companies and symphonies. The starting lineups and batters will be announced in both English and in Spanish.
