SEATTLE -- The Mariners began a three-game Interleague set against the Dodgers on Friday night without Jean Segura, as the All-Star shortstop was placed on paternity leave prior Seattle's 11-1 loss in the series opener.
The move opened the door for Dee Gordon to play shortstop for the first time with the Mariners, since Robinson Cano is now back from his 80-game suspension and can handle second-base duties.
Gordon played all nine innings without getting a ground ball hit to him, though he had three putouts at the bag and turned a double play.
Veteran infielder James Beckham was called up from Triple-A Tacoma to fill Segura's roster spot and had an eighth-inning pinch-hit single.
Segura's wife was expected to give birth Friday night and manager Scott Servais said he didn't know yet when the 28-year-old would rejoin the team. Players can take up to three days on paternity leave, if they choose.
Gordon started in center field in Wednesday's 12-inning victory in Oakland for the first time since mid-May, and Servais is now taking further advantage of his versatility by inserting him at shortstop while hitting ninth in Friday's game.
"The thing with even sliding him into center field the other day, you don't try to overcoach or overanalyze it," Servais said. "Just go out there and catch fly balls. Slide over to shortstop and catch a few ground balls. We'll put you in the right spot based on who is pitching and hitting and all that stuff. This guy is a tremendous athlete. That's one thing that doesn't go away, your athleticism. And we're going to try to take advantage of it."
Told he was needed to play shortstop in Segura's absence, Gordon said his response was simple: "Cool."
Gordon converted from shortstop to second base in 2013 while with the Dodgers, and he played three games at shortstop last year (including two starts) with the Marlins.

The Mariners also have utility man Andrew Romine available to play shortstop as well as Beckham. Romine has played every position for Seattle this year, with 12 games (including eight starts) at shortstop.
Segura has posted a .314/.343/.437 line in 114 games for Seattle this season, with nine home runs, 56 RBIs, 78 runs scored and 17 stolen bases. He has been hitting in the No. 3 spot in the lineup for the past week. He's hit .452 (14-for-31) with a double and home run in his past seven games.
The Mariners host the Dodgers for three games this weekend, then close out their six-game homestand with a three-game series against the American League West-leading Astros.

Beckham had to be added to the 40-man roster before being promoted, so outfielder John Andreoli was designated for assignment to open up a spot.
Beckham has hit .200 (7-for-35) with one double and one RBI in 13 games in two stints with Seattle this season, and he batted .311/.411/.479 with nine homers and 49 RBIs in 82 games for Tacoma.
Andreoli made his Major League debut earlier this season. He has been with the Mariners on three occasions, going 1-for-5 with a walk in three games. The 28-year-old is hitting .287 with three homers, 36 RBIs and 19 stolen bases with Tacoma.
