With mom watching, Mariners prospect hurls no-no

Seattle's sixth-ranked prospect Victor Sanchez tossed a no-hitter for the Class A Clinton LumberKings on Wednesday night -- an extraordinary feat made even more special by the fact that his mother had just flown in from Venezuela to see it, MiLB.com reported.

The 18-year-old Sanchez threw all nine innings at Ashford University Field in Clinton, Iowa, striking out eight and allowing just a hit batter, as well as two errors, in the LumberKings' 1-0 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts. It was the 22nd no-no in Clinton history, but just the seventh by one pitcher lasting all nine innings.

"I'm not sure how to describe my emotions right now," Sanchez told MiLB.com through a translator. "I'm happy. My mother and wife were here to see me pitch, so I'm happy. When I saw [my mother], she reinforced that I was very good. Before the game, she told me that I could do it."

The last time Sanchez had seen his mother was at his grandmother's funeral a month prior. Understandably, he was filled with emotion Wednesday night.

"It was a tremendous performance," LumberKings pitching coach Andrew Lorraine told MiLB.com. "His mom was in the stands, so it was an emotional performance."

Sanchez lowered his ERA to 2.83 on the season with a 2-4 record.
