MIAMI -- Mike Redmond's staff is now complete.
The Marlins on Friday afternoon announced the hiring of Rob Leary as bench coach and Chuck Hernandez as pitching coach. Leary and Hernandez are the final two coaches to join Redmond, who was hired on Nov. 1 to replace Ozzie Guillen.
"Super excited to have Rob Leary and Chuck Hernandez on the staff," Redmond responded in a text message.
Hernandez was the Tigers' pitching coach during their 2006 World Series season, while Leary enters his first year as a Major League bench coach, and he will begin his second tenure in Miami.
From 1995-2001, the former catcher held a variety of assignments in the Marlins' organization. In 2012, he served as the Indians' Minor League field coordinator.
Hernandez has 31 years of professional experience, and he's spent the past two as an assistant coach at the University of South Florida.
The Marlins' staff also includes Tino Martinez (hitting), Perry Hill (infield/first base), Joe Espada (third base/baserunning) and Reid Cornelius (bullpen). Jeffrey Urgelles returns as the bullpen coordinator.
Hill, regarded as one of the top infield instructors in the game, rejoins the organization for the third time. His first stint was 2002-06, and he returned for one year in '11. From 2003-05, Marlins infielders won five Gold Glove Awards.
Espada and Cornelius are the lone coaches returning from Guillen's staff.
Leary has previous history with Redmond, as both were with the Marlins in the 1990s. Leary was a Red Sox Major League coaching staff assistant from 2010-11, after he spent seven seasons as Boston's Minor League field coordinator (2003-09) and one ('02) as its Minor League catching coordinator.
Leary was with the Marlins as their catching coordinator from 1995-96, and then he became Minor League field coordinator (1997-98), director of field operations (1999-2000) and Major League advance scout ('01).
During his playing days, Leary spent five Minor League seasons in the Montreal Expos organization. He was a player/coach at Class A Rockford in 1990.
Hernandez takes over for Randy St. Claire as pitching coach. Hernandez was the pitching coach for the Tigers from 2006-08, and Tampa Bay from 2004-05. He's also coached in the Angels organization.
