MIAMI -- The Marlins are looking to add affordable depth, and they are ready to offer an opportunity to a left-handed hitter with power potential.
On Friday afternoon, Miami claimed first baseman Joe Mahoney off waivers from Baltimore. The 25-year-old appeared in two games with the Orioles last year, and he was hitless in four at-bats.
Adding Mahoney gives the Marlins 38 players on their 40-man roster.
Mahoney is a 6-foot-6, 240-pounder who batted .265 with 10 home runs and 56 RBIs at Triple-A in 2012. His best season was in '10, when he batted .307 with 18 homers and 78 RBIs.
Mahoney also can play a corner outfield position.
The Marlins are switching Logan Morrison from left field to first base. Morrison is recovering from surgery to his right knee and is expected to be ready for the start of Spring Training.
Miami is looking to add some power to its lineup. But the club is searching for bargains with its payroll expected to be around $40 million.
