D-backs claim Sanabia off waivers from Marlins

MIAMI -- Alex Sanabia, who opened the season in the Marlins' rotation, was claimed off waivers on Friday by the D-Backs.

A San Diego native, Sanabia was 3-7 with a 4.88 ERA in 10 starts for Miami.

The 25-year-old righty was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 27 with right groin discomfort. He never returned, and on July 23, he was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

Sanabia was expected to begin the 2013 season at Triple-A New Orleans. But, along with Jose Fernandez, he was added to the rotation coming out of Spring Training due to injuries to Henderson Alvarez and Nathan Eovaldi.

Sanabia aggravated his groin during a May 7 start at San Diego, an outing in which he was lifted after 4 1/3 innings in his hometown.

The right-hander ended up making three more starts, last appearing on May 26 in an Interleague game at the White Sox.

Sanabia pitched in parts of three big league seasons, making his MLB debut in 2010. He's 8-10 with a 4.15 ERA in 28 games career games, including 24 starts.

The Marlins selected Sanabia in the 32nd round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft.
