Straily's grandparents lose home to wildfires
Straily's grandparents lose home to wildfires

MIAMI -- The raging wildfires burning across Northern California destroyed the home of the grandparents of Marlins right-hander Dan Straily. On Thursday, Straily tweeted: "Devasted to learn that my grandparents lost their home in the fire that is destroying part of Northern California. They were able to get out safe with pets in hands before the fire destroyed the entire neighborhood that they lived." A GoFundMe page account -- Bernie and Carol Fire Fund -- was set up to assist Straily's grandparents.
Devastated to learn that my grandparents lost their home in the fire that is destroying part of Northern California. They were able to get out safe with pets in hands before the fire destroyed the entire neighborhood that they lived https://t.co/8PIfmjYGkTpic.twitter.com/yGPXf3moyL
The goal is to raise $10,000. As of late Thursday night, more than $6,000 was raised. The page notes that Bernie and Carol, and their pets, are safe, but they received confirmation that their home was gone. Every house in the neighborhood also was lost. The devastation was so bad, the fire department couldn't identify house numbers. To escape the rage of the fires, Bernie and Carol didn't have time to pack any of their belongings. So they didn't collect any extra clothing or toiletries. They fled by truck and left behind a car, which also was destroyed. Straily, 29, has been with the Marlins since 2017. The right-hander broke into the big leagues with the A's in 2012 and has also played for the Cubs, Astros and Reds in his MLB career.
