Stanton has surgery; Marlins confirm timeframe

MIAMI -- Giancarlo Stanton had surgery performed on his left hand on Sunday, and the Marlins' All-Star right fielder is expected to miss 4-6 weeks.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Patrick Owens, a hand specialist, at the University of Miami Hospital. All indications are that the slugger should recover within the projected timeframe.

"From everything we've gotten, surgery was a success," Marlins manager Dan Jennings said. "Now you just go through the healing process to have him back. From what we've been told, you're looking at about a 4-6 week window, recovery time."

Stanton fractured the hamate bone in his left hand on a swing on Friday night against the Dodgers at Marlins Park. The Marlins placed the slugger on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday.

Stanton, who leads the Majors in home runs (27) and RBIs (67), is currently second among National League outfielders in the All-Star voting. But the injury means he won't be able to participate in the game, or the Home Run Derby.

In 74 games, Stanton is batting .265/.346/.606.

One of the most feared hitters in the game, the Marlins will look to pick up the pieces in Stanton's absence. The club ended up winning without Stanton, 3-2, on Saturday, but on Sunday, Miami was blanked 2-0 by the Dodgers, who took two of three in the series.

Ichiro Suzuki is getting starts in right field with Stanton out.
