Green goes on DL; Morrison's season is over

Nick Green, hindered by a sprained left thumb, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday before the Marlins opened a four-game series against the Rockies at Coors Field.

Infielder Gil Velazquez's contract was purchased from Triple-A New Orleans. The 32-year-old utilityman infielder hit .314 in 101 games with the Zephyrs.

To make room for Velazquez on the 40-man roster, Logan Morrison was transferred to the 60-day disabled list, which means he will not return this season.

Morrison, Miami's Opening Day left fielder, recently had his right knee examined by Dr. Richard Steadman in Vail, Colo. At the time, the recommendation was three weeks of rest was recommended.

But Morrison told reporters a few days ago that he likely was finished for the season, and surgery remains a likely possibility.

Morrison went on the disabled list on July 29 with right knee inflammation. Morrison had surgery on the knee last December, and it bothered him all season.

His last game was on July 28, after he had gone five straight games without a hit. The left-handed hitting outfielder batted .230 with 11 homers and 36 RBIs in 93 games.

The Marlins are leaning toward switching Morrison back to first base next season. Foremost, he has to be healthy.

Green's thumb was injured while he was making a diving attempt at third base against the Dodgers. There remains considerable swelling in the thumb. He appeared in seven games after being promoted from New Orleans.

Velazquez has appeared in 13 big league games, seeing action in four games with the Angels in 2011.
