Marlins select LHP Andrew Heaney in first round of 2012 Draft

Heaney selected with ninth pick overall

The Miami Marlins tonight announced the selection of left-handed pitcher Andrew Heaney with the ninth overall pick in Major League Baseball's 2012 First-Year Player Draft. The announcement was made by Vice President of Scouting Stan Meek.

Heaney, who turns 21 tomorrow, is a junior from Oklahoma St. University. He was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year and a Division I First-Team, All-American. He finished the current season with an 8-2, 1.60 record in 15 starts, while leading the NCAA with 140 strikeouts in 118.1 innings. Heaney is an Oklahoma City native and graduated from Putnam City High School.

Heaney was Miami’s only selection on the first day of the Draft, which will resume tomorrow at noon with rounds 2-15. The Draft will conclude on Wednesday, June 6, with rounds 16-40 starting at noon.
