MIAMI -- Founded in 1993, the Marlins franchise has no officially retired numbers, though no player has worn No. 16 since Jose Fernandez's death in a boating accident in September of 2016. Former team owner Jeffrey Loria talked about retiring 16, but that has not happened yet.

From their inaugural 1993 season through 2011 -- the team's entire run as the Florida Marlins -- the No. 5 was retired in honor of the first team president, Carl Barger, who died before the Marlins played their first game. Barger's favorite player was Joe DiMaggio, who wore No. 5. In February of 2012, the Marlins agreed to unretire No. 5 and allow Logan Morrison to wear it. Morrison did so as a tribute to his father, Tom, who passed away in 2010 after battling lung cancer, and who idolized another famous No. 5 -- George Brett.

Note: On April 15, 1997, the Marlins joined every team in MLB in retiring No. 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson.
