MIAMI -- Former Marlins and Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez has had multiple conversations with Miami about its vacated third-base coaching position, sources have told MLB.com. But the 52-year-old is in the process of mulling all his options.
Gonzalez, relieved of his managerial duties with Atlanta in May, managed the Marlins from 2007-10. His contract with the Braves ran through this season.
The Marlins are in the process of filling three vacancies on manager Don Mattingly's staff, after the club announced on Oct. 5 that it was not bringing back Barry Bonds (hitting), Lenny Harris (third base) and Reid Cornelius (bullpen).
Mike Pagliarulo, a former teammate of Mattingly with the Yankees, is receiving consideration for one of two hitting coach spots. Arnie Beyeler, who managed Triple-A New Orleans, is another candidate, perhaps as a third-base coach.
Before becoming manager of the Marlins in 2007, Gonzalez was the third-base coach of the Braves for manager Bobby Cox.
Gonzalez's record managing the Marlins was 276-279 before he was replaced by Edwin Rodriguez in May 2010.
Gonzalez also is weighing broadcasting and coaching opportunities.
Mattingly is on record saying he favors having two hitting coaches.
Frank Menechino is under contract through 2017, and he could return as the primary hitting coach next year. He was the Marlins main hitting coach in 2014-15 before he took on the role of assistant hitting coach when Bonds was hired. Menechino is highly respected by the players, and did much of the daily preparation this season.
It's unclear if the Marlins will have co-hitting coaches or a main coach and an assistant.
