Marlins sign RHP Anthony Bass to multi-year contract

Veteran reliever boasts 3.44 ERA and 12 saves over last three seasons

MIAMI -- The Miami Marlins today announced the signing of RHP Anthony Bass to a two-year contract with a team option for 2023. Bass pitched in 26 games out of the bullpen for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2020, going 2-3 with a 3.51 ERA and notching seven saves in 25.2 innings, limiting hitters to a .189 batting average. Last season, he finished tied for 11th among MLB relievers in ground ball percentage (62.3), trailing new teammate LHP Richard Bleier, who led all Major Leaguers (72.0).

The 33-year-old was a fifth-round pick in the 2008 draft by the San Diego Padres and has pitched in parts of nine Major League seasons with six teams. A native of Dearborn, Mich., Bass is 9-16 with a 4.32 ERA in 217 games (18 starts). As a reliever, he is 5-9 with a 4.26 ERA in 199 appearances, collecting 15 saves, including 12 combined in the last two seasons.

Over the last three seasons, Bass owns a 3.44 ERA, going 4-7 with 12 saves in 86 relief appearances. In that span, he limited hitters to a .205 average across 89.0 innings, with a 1.06 WHIP.

In 24 career appearances against National League East division foes, Bass has held opponents to a .232 average, his lowest against any division in the Majors.

To make room on the 40-man roster, RHP Jordan Yamamoto was designated for assignment.
