Álvarez reaches four times in loss

Keeping tabs on the Mets' No. 1 prospect

September 29th, 2022

Álvarez was ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 13 international prospect during the 2018-19 signing period, and the Venezuela native signed with the Mets for $2.7 million that July. The 20-year-old backstop has lived up to all the hype and more. Even if Álvarez didn’t play a premium position at catcher, he would be one of the most exciting offensive prospects in baseball. But as a rare slugger who plays behind the plate, Álvarez’s profile does gets a huge boost, one big enough to make him the top prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline.
