Mets acquire infielder Hicks from A's for cash

NEW YORK -- The Mets continued their string of minor moves on Monday, acquiring infielder Brandon Hicks from the A's in exchange for cash considerations.

Hicks, 27, hit .172 with three home runs in 22 games for the A's last season, appearing primarily as a shortstop. Hicks also appeared in the big leagues with the Braves in 2010 and '11, and boasts experience at all four infield positions. Spending most of last season at Triple-A Sacramento, he batted .244 with 18 home runs in 328 at-bats there.

He will give the Mets a measure of infield depth with last year's primary backup shortstop, Ronny Cedeno, seeking a starting job elsewhere. Ruben Tejada and Daniel Murphy should return next season as the starting shortstop and second baseman, respectively, but Justin Turner is the only other player on the 40-man roster who owns both middle-infield experience and a Major League resume.

Atlanta's third-round Draft pick in 2007, Hicks is a career .241 hitter with a .766 OPS over six Minor League seasons.
