The New York Mets announced today that the club has acquired outfielder Keon Broxton from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for RHP Bobby Wahl, minor league RHP Adam Hill and minor league infielder Felix Valerio.
Broxton, 28, hit 20 homers and stole 21 bases in 2017 for the Brewers. According to Fangraphs, he has 13 defensive runs saved since 2016, the 14th-most among all major league centerfielders. In addition, he has 49 stolen bases during that span.
"Keon is a dynamic athlete with the ability to impact the game in the outfield, on the bases and with his bat," Mets General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen said. "He adds depth to our major league roster for 2019 and into the future."
Broxton caught the last out of the NL Central tie-breaker game at Wrigley Field last year. The 6-3, 195-pounder appeared in two postseason games and slugged a solo homer in Game 3 of the 2018 NLDS at Coors Field. The Lakeland, FL native had two doubles, two triples, four homers, 11 RBI, five stolen bases and 15 runs scored in 51 games in 2018 for Milwaukee.
During his four-year major league career, Broxton has belted 33 homers, swiped 50 bases, collected 27 doubles and driven in 79 runs in 276 games with the Pirates and Brewers.
Wahl, 26, was acquired by the Mets from Oakland on July 21, 2018 as part of the deal that sent RHP Jeurys Familia to the Athletics. He went 0-1 with a 10.13 ERA (six earned runs/5.1 innings) in seven contests for New York last year.
Hill, 21, was the Mets fourth-round pick in 2018 from the University of South Carolina. He went 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA (four earned runs/15.1 innings) in nine games in relief for the Brooklyn Cyclones (A) last season.
Valerio, 18, batted .319 (84-263) with 17 doubles, three homers and 22 RBI in 67 games in the Dominican Summer League in his first professional season last year.
