Mets' Murphy wins NL weekly honor

The Mets' Daniel Murphy was named the National League Player of the Week on Tuesday after a seven-game stretch that saw him net four games with two or more hits.

Murphy batted .448 (13-for-29) last week with seven RBIs, and he tied for the most runs scored (seven) and hits (13) among all N.L. batters. Murphy also led the league with five doubles last week, and he put together a career-best four-hit game in the Mets' 11-3 victory over Philadelphia on Thursday.

Murphy, who logged a .448 on-base percentage and a .621 slugging mark last week, went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in New York's 3-2 win over Washington on Friday. The veteran continued his tear with a three-hit game with two runs and two RBIs in an 11-3 victory on Saturday.

Murphy, 28, had two hits and two RBIs in a 6-5 loss on Sunday. The native of Jacksonville, Fla., had 18 total bases last week, tied for third among all NL hitters. Murphy's .448 average was seventh among all NL batters, and he has 158 hits for the season, fifth in the league.

Murphy, a former 13th-round selection in the First-Year Player Draft, won the Player of the Week award for the first time in his career. In five seasons, Murphy is a career .289 hitter.

Murphy's teammate, Jonathon Niese, turned in an outstanding performance last week with a 1.23 ERA in two starts, and Joe Kelly of the Cardinals went 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in 12 innings. The Dodgers' Zack Greinke went 2-0 with a 1.72 ERA and 16 strikeouts in two outings last week.

Other noteworthy hitters include the Cardinals' Allen Craig (.455 average, .478 on-base percentage, .682 slugging), Washington's Ian Desmond (.480 hitting with .640 slugging), Milwaukee's Scooter Gennett (.455 average with a .500 OBP) and the Dodgers' Yasiel Puig (.458 with .792 slugging).
