Mets nearing deal to move radio broadcast stations

ST. LOUIS -- The Mets are nearing a deal with Clear Channel Media and Entertainment to move their radio broadcast to WOR 710 AM beginning next season, according to a source. Longtime radio play-by-play man Howie Rose is expected to remain the voice of the team at its new broadcast home.

The Yankees announced next month that they planned to shift from WCBS to WFAN, which had broadcast Mets games since its inception in 1987, and Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon said at the time that he planned to have a new radio deal in place within six weeks.

That pact will be with WOR, a 50,000-watt station with a reach similar to that of WFAN. The Mets have not commented on the deal because it is not yet official.

In addition to WOR, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment owns five popular FM stations in New York, including WHTZ (Z100) and WLTW (Lite FM), which the Mets plan to use to market their games.

Rose, who was with WFAN at its inception in 1987, has been the Mets' lead play-by-play voice since 2006. He worked eight years prior to that for Fox Sports New York/MSG, which broadcast Mets games on television. It is not yet clear whether analyst Josh Lewin will also join Clear Channel.
