The New York Mets announced today that they have selected the contract of infielder Phillip Evans from Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League. To make room on the 40-man roster for Evans, the Mets have transferred lefthanded pitcher Steven Matz to the 60-Day Disabled List. Evans will wear #72 and is active for tonight's game with Cincinnati.
Evans, who turns 25 on Sunday, batted .279 (130-466) with 26 doubles, three triples, 11 home runs, 56 RBI and 58 runs scored in 127 games for the 51s in his first season at the Triple-A level. In the second half of the season, Evans batted .328 (61-186) with 15 doubles, six home runs, 21 RBI and a .914 OPS.
Last season, Evans won the Eastern League batting title with Binghamton (AA) after hitting .335 (121-361) in his first season at the Double-A level.
In 609 career minor league games, Evans batted .260 (567-2177) with 111 doubles, eight triples, 30 home runs, 226 RBI and 238 runs scored.
He was originally drafted by the Mets in the 15th round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of La Costa Canyon (CA) High School.
