MIAMI -- Less than 24 hours after being one-hit by the Marlins, the Mets merely doubled their hit total in Sunday’s 3-0 loss at Marlins Park as Miami completed its first sweep since September 2017.

New York has dropped five in a row to fall a season-high five games below .500, as rumors concerning manager Mickey Callaway’s future persist.

Sunday's getaway day proved to be a pitchers' duel of the flamethrowing variety with right-handers Noah Syndergaard and Sandy Alcantara on the mound.

Syndergaard took a perfect game into the fifth and allowed just two runs over seven strong innings, but Alcantara recorded his first complete game and faced the minimum through seven thanks to a pair of Robinson Cano double-play balls.

The Mets’ best opportunity came in the eighth, when Pete Alonso opened with a four-pitch walk. After Brandon Nimmo struck out looking, Adeiny Hechavarria bounced a pitch back to Alcantara, whose throwing error to second allowed both runners to reach. Callaway called on Dominic Smith to pinch-hit for Juan Lagares. Smith got ahead 3-0, but he grounded into an inning-ending double play.
