PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- As part of the 30th anniversary celebration of their last World Series championship, the Mets announced Monday that they will wear 1986 throwback uniforms every home Sunday during the regular season.
The pinstriped white uniforms feature blue and orange piping down the sleeves, sides and pants, as well as a commemorative patch on the left arm. They add to a uniform mix that also includes home whites, road grays and blue home/road alternates.
The Mets plan to honor the 1986 team formally before their game on May 28, with all coaches and players invited to Citi Field to take part in the ceremonies. Several of them already spend time around the team regularly, including current third-base coach Tim Teufel, Triple-A Las Vegas manager Wally Backman and SNY broadcasters Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling.
The Mets also plan to give away '86-themed T-shirts on May 27 and replica championship rings on May 29.
