Wright not quite ready, likely out for Giants series

NEW YORK -- There was a chance David Wright was going to be back in in the Mets' lineup for their series against the Giants on Tuesday, but manager Terry Collins said his third baseman isn't quite ready to go, and probably will not play during the three-game set.

As he continues to work his way back from a strained right hamstring, Wright ran the bases for the first time last week, a major step toward getting back on the field. But Collins said Wright's been a "little sore" after going through numerous running and fielding drills, and isn't ready for the wear and tear his body would take during a game.

"He's been a little stiff. The day off really helped him. He felt great today. He looked great today," Collins said. "We talked the other day and we feel that under the circumstances, he's not ready to go just yet."

While Wright's testing his hamstring in drills, it still isn't at the same level as he would during a game when his competitiveness is heightened. Collins said the team has been taking that into consideration as it decides when Wright can return to the lineup.

It's possible Wright could return this weekend, though the exact day cannot be determined until the Mets see how Wright responds to drills on back-to-back days. While Collins said Wright looked "great" on Tuesday, if he wakes up on Wednesday with any stiffness, his return could be pushed back.

But Collins remained confident that Wright will be back before the season ends.

"I think David is going to play, you're going to see him back on the field before the season's over," Collins said. "I think it's going to be important for David to know he's 100 percent healthy, and I think it's important for our team, for our organization and our fanbase to know, 'Hey look, our star is going to be OK when it comes spring.'"
