Dickey up for three of Mets' eight GIBBY nominations

NEW YORK -- Continuing his dominance of Major League Baseball's awards season, R.A. Dickey is personally responsible for three of the Mets' eight Greatness in Baseball Yearly (GIBBY) nominations.

Dickey is a GIBBY finalist for Starting Pitcher of the Year, Breakout Pitcher of the Year and Storyline of the Year, following a season that saw him win 20 games, fire consecutive one-hitters and establish himself as a National League Cy Young Award favorite -- to name only a few of his numerous personal highlights.

Major League Baseball's A-listers will take home 2012 GIBBYs trophies -- the ultimate honors of baseball's awards season -- based on votes by you the fans at MLB.com, media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni and the Society for American Baseball Research.

This year's GIBBY Awards feature nominees in 21 categories. Individual honors will go to the MLB MVP, in addition to the year's best starting pitcher, hitter, closer, setup man, rookie, breakout hitter, breakout pitcher, comeback player, defensive player, manager, executive and postseason performer.

GIBBY trophies also will be awarded for the year's top play, storyline, hitting performance, pitching performance, oddity, walk-off, Cut4 topic and postseason moment, from MLB.com's Must C highlight reels.

In the past four years, fans have cast more than 40 million votes across the various GIBBYs categories, none of which were restricted to individual League affiliation. Fans can vote as many times as they want until balloting closes Sunday, Dec. 2, at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Winners will receive their GIBBY trophies at the MLB.com Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards extravaganza during the Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tenn., on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

In addition to Dickey's three nominations, the Mets are well-represented on the ballot despite a fourth straight losing season.

Third baseman David Wright is a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year, following a summer that saw him avoid errors and post the best defensive metrics of his career -- better even than in his Gold Glove Award seasons of 2007 and '08. Wright was bested in Gold Glove voting by Padres third baseman Chase Headley, but Headley is not on the GIBBY ballot.

An even warmer memory for Mets fans came courtesy of Mike Baxter, whose leaping catch to save Johan Santana's no-hitter is nominated for Play of the Year. Slamming into Citi Field's left-field wall to rob Yadier Molina of an extra-base hit on June 1, Baxter displaced his collarbone on the play and missed two months.

Santana's no-hitter, unsurprisingly, was nominated for Pitching Performance of the Year. In his first season back from major left shoulder surgery, Santana fired a career-high 134 pitches in his first career no-no.

The Mets are also up for two less-traditional awards. The praying mantis that delayed a Mets-Nationals game in August is up for Oddity of the Year. And the Mets' musical tribute to late Beastie Boys band member MCA has been nominated for Cut4 Topic of the Year.
