Matz earns NL Rookie of the Month honors for May

Mets left-hander Steven Matz has been named National League Rookie of the Month for May.
The 25-year-old went 4-0 with a 1.83 ERA in five May starts, striking out 31 batters in 34 1/3 inning while issuing just four walks.
Matz ranked fifth among all NL pitchers in ERA on the month, while his 0.76 WHIP was second only to the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw.
Matz turned in quality starts in four of his five May outings. He opened the month by throwing 7 2/3 shutout innings against the Braves on May 4, and he later tossed eight shutout innings against the Nationals on May 25.
Matz is now 7-1 with a 2.60 ERA in nine starts overall.
