Soroka will become the youngest Opening Day starter in Braves modern-era history and MLB's youngest OD starter since Jose Fernandez in 2014. The 22-year-old righty posted an impressive 1.55 ERA in 16 road starts last year.

The two-time reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, deGrom will begin his quest to make it three in a row on Opening Day. He’ll likely be limited to around 85 pitches because a bout of back stiffness late in camp prevented him from stretching out to his usual length.

Fried led NL left-handers with 17 wins last year and proved himself as a big league starter. The lefty had a 2.96 ERA through his first 10 starts, then overcame some midseason struggles to right himself down the stretch.

Key to Matz’s success this year will be avoiding the “blow-up” starts that hurt his bottom line last season. He was a different pitcher in the second half, going 6-4 with a 3.52 ERA over his final 14 starts. Most important, Matz has been healthy for two straight seasons.

Newcomb will be given a chance to return to the rotation. The lefty, who finally showed some consistency in the bullpen last year, will try to employ the same aggressive approach as a starter.

The Mets slid Porcello forward in the rotation to cover for Marcus Stroman, who will be nursing a left calf tear for the foreseeable future. That’s precisely why they acquired Porcello over the winter, hoping his history of big innings totals would give them the depth to cover for injuries.
