Summary

The Akron RubberDucks struck for two in the ninth to come from behind to defeat the Erie SeaWolves 6-5 on Saturday night at UPMC Park.

Turning Point

Down a run entering the ninth, Akron answered. Ryan Cesarini doubled to open the frame. Two batters later, Alex Mooney singled him home to tie the game. After a single by Tyresse Turner advanced Mooney to second, Nick Mitchell singled to right to score Mooney and put Akron ahead 6-5.

Mound Presence

Caden Favors ran into some early trouble in his Saturday night start. The left-hander allowed two first inning runs but quickly settled in to keep Erie off the board the rest of his night. In total, Favors allowed the two runs and struck out four over four innings. Jay Driver allowed three runs over two and a third innings while striking out three. Kendeglys Virguez struck out three over an inning and two-thirds scoreless. Carter Rustad struck out two in a scoreless ninth to secure the win.

Duck Tales

Trailing 2-0 after one, the RubberDucks offense answered back in the third. Aaron Walton walked to open the inning before eventually scoring on a two-out single by Mitchell. Jaison Chourio followed with an RBI double to tie the game 2-2. Bennett Thompson gave Akron’s its first lead of the night in the fourth when he launched a solo home run to center. After Erie tied the game in the fifth, Akron retook the lead in the seventh. Mooney doubled with two outs to score Cesarini to make it 4-3 RubberDucks.

Notebook

Schubart walked in the fourth to extend his on-base streak to 55 games…Curley has reached base in 12 of his 13 games played with Akron…Three of Akron’s six runs came with two outs…Mitchell recorded his fifth three-hit game of the year…Game Time: 2:50…Attendance: 3,529.
