Bullpen Falters as Jackets Drop Saturday Night Affair
Strong Start Squandered as Late Rally Falls Short in Front of Sellout Crowd
NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: In front of one of the biggest home crowds of the season, the Augusta GreenJackets (32-26, 67-57) were unable to hold a lead in the final three innings, as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (20-38, 47-75) scored five runs against Augusta’s bullpen to steal a 6-5 win Saturday night.
The bullpen’s struggles undermined what was another strong start from Luis Arestigueta, who has been brilliant to end the season. Arestigueta carved through five innings with just one unearned run allowed, while striking out six without a walk. Arestigueta has now not allowed an earned run in his last 16 innings, with tonight’s tally the only one overall in that time.
As Arestigueta worked through his strong start, Augusta’s young infielders showcased their offensive prowess to take the early lead against Riely Hunsaker and the Pelicans. Juan Mateo opened the scoring in the first with a two-run homer to right, and two innings later, it was Manuel Campos who clubbed his first SRP Park homer to take what was a 3-0 lead at the time.
The Jackets’ bats were unable to add on in the middle innings, and it all came undone in the top of the 7th. Nico Wagner retired the side in order in his first frame of relief, but struggled in his second act as the lead evaporated in one half-inning. Wagner walked the first two men of the frame, before Alexis Hernandez yanked a two-run double down the line to tie the game. Wagner then hit Jose Silva with a pitch, and both Hernandez and Silva scored on Juan Cabada’s first hit of the week, which gave the Pelicans the lead for good.
Augusta got a run back in the bottom half courtesy of a sacrifice fly, but stranded the bases loaded and the tying run at third as shutdown closer Jordan Henriquez quelled the threat. Myrtle Beach then added a massive piece of insurance in the top of the ninth, manufacturing a run against Kade Woods to take a two-run advantage into the bottom of the ninth inning.
True to form, the GreenJackets did not quit, and fought until the final out against Henriquez. Nick Montgomery brought the tying run to the plate with a hustle double, giving the offense a chance. Down to the final out, Manuel Campos lofted a fly ball the other way, which looked as though it would end the game, but Darlyn De Leon undercut left fielder Caden Sorrell and dropped the ball to extend the game. The tying run then was at second base, and Caleb Klein hit a rocket to left, but it was right at Sorrell, and the rally came up short.
There is just one home game left in the 2026 season, slated for tomorrow at 5:05. South Carolina native Will Holmes makes his pro debut on the mound after a series of successful seasons at The Citadel, looking to end the home season on a high note at SRP Park.
