Jackets Fail to Find Big Swing in Second Straight Loss
Augusta Musters Just One Hit with Runners in Scoring Position Against RiverDogs
CHARLESTON, SC: The Augusta GreenJackets (33-28, 68-59) created continuous chances against the Charleston RiverDogs (34-28, 71-57) Wednesday night, but went 1-13 with runners in scoring position as a series of left chances went unfulfilled in a 3-1 loss.
After the offense was held quiet through four innings by starter Miguel Toscano, the GreenJackets put a man at third base in each of the final five innings, but scored just one run in that time. Toscano navigated a leadoff double from Jacob Jarrell in the fifth, using a fielder’s choice, caught stealing, and groundout to qualify for his first win as a starter at the Single-A level.
Augusta’s lone run of the day came in the 7th against reliever Efrailin Ramos, who took over for Toscano in the 6th. Jarrell led off the frame with another two-bagger, and stole third before Yamvier Carrero clubbed a two-out single to right to get Augusta on the board. Unfortunately for the Jackets, they would not pick up another hit with RISP and could not close the gap.
Charleston scored in the bottom of the first for the second straight game and never trailed, manufacturing a run against Yander Pinero in the youngster’s first Single-A loss. The Dogs opened the scoring on a sacrifice fly from Taitn Gray, then doubled the lead in the third thanks to a two-out RBI from Cooper Flemming.
Pinero left the game in the fourth with the Athletic Trainer, but Augusta’s bullpen was very solid in relief to give the Jackets a chance late. Logan Forsythe and Gensi Angeles combined to allow just one run in 4.2 innings of relief, holding one of the best offenses in the league at bay.
The Jackets were unable to utilize a one-out double from Manuel Campos in the 8th, as Riley Stanford struck out back-to-back batters to keep Charleston in front. Augusta created a phenomenal chance against Stanford in the final frame, however, as a single, hit batter, and walk loaded the bases with no outs. Stanford stood tall, however, and Augusta’s woes with RISP continued as three straight hitters struck out swinging to strand the baserunners aboard and prevent a comeback win.
Tomorrow night, Landon Beidelschies makes his final start of the 2026 season, fresh off a winning effort at home last week against Myrtle Beach. The RiverDogs will look to keep building momentum ahead of their playoff matchup with the Hickory Crawdads next week, entrusting the ball to Jacob Kuhn after he took the loss last week against the Columbia Fireflies.
