BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (31-29) surrendered 21 hits in a 17-5 loss to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (23-37) on Thursday night at Mirabito Stadium.
The loss marked the most runs Binghamton has allowed this season, and it matched the most hits they have allowed as they surrendered 21 hits on July 8 against the Hartford Yard Goats.
New Hampshire scored 10 runs between the third and fourth inning against right-hander Will Watson (L, 0-6) who surrendered seven runs over 2.1 innings pitched, and right-hander Brendnan Girton who allowed four runs over 1.0 inning of work.
In the third inning, New Hampshire tallied four consecutive hits. First baseman Dub Gleed tallied an RBI single and right fielder Carter Cunningham highlighted the inning with a three-run home run to make it 5-0.
The Fisher Cats hit two home runs in the fourth inning against Girton and right-hander Daktoa Hawkins. Designated hitter Adrian Pinto laced an RBI single to score second baseman JR Freethy who doubled. With two on, Gleed belted a three-run home run. Hawkins then entered and immediately allowed a solo shot to left fielder Aaron Parker to make it 10-0.
Gleed finished the night with six, RBI and is the first Fisher Cat to do so since Miguel Hiraldo did so against Binghamton on August 25, 2023.
New Hampshire right-hander Jackson Wentworth (W, 7-8) pitched 3.0 scoreless frames until he allowed four runs in the fourth inning. He finished 5.0 innings in his fourth start against Binghamton.
Binghamton added four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 10-4. Right fielder JT Benson tallied an RBI single and then one batter later second baseman Jamari Baylor notched a three-run home run for his first Double-A big fly.
New Hampshire came right back with three runs in the fifth inning to lead 13-4. The Fisher Cats again started the inning with four consecutive hits. Pinto had his second RBI single, and Gleed brought in two with a single. Seven different New Hampshire hitters had multi-hit games. Hawkins allowed four runs over 1.2 innings pitched.
In the sixth inning, New Hampshire powered ahead, 16-4. Cunningham led-off the inning with a triple, and center fielder Victor Arias brought him in with a base hit. Catcher Edward Duran had an RBI double, and Pinto cashed in his third RBI with a groundout. Right-hander Bryce Conley pitched 2.0 innings and allowed all three runs in the sixth inning.
The Rumble Ponies added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning against right-hander Alex Amalfi. Benson hit a solo home run, his second Double-A homer to set the score at 16-5.
Left-hander Gabby Rodrgiuez took the ball for Binghamton in the eighth inning, and third baseman Cutter Coffey made him pay with a solo home run to make it 17-5 New Hampshire.
Benson pitched the ninth inning for the second time this year and he did not allow a run on no hits and one left on base.
After Thursday night’s loss, Binghamton is 4.0 games out of first place with nine games remaining. A Reading Fightin Phils victory over the Hartford Yard Goats on Thursday night would push Binghamton’s deficit to 4.5 games.
The Rumble Ponies continue a six-game series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Double-A, Toronto Blue Jays) on Friday at Mirabito Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast on MiLB.TV News Radio 1290 AM & 92.1 FM, and on the WNBF News Radio App.
