READING, Pa. – Marco Vargas, Jefferson Rojas and Mitch Voit combined for nine RBIs as the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (29-28) stormed past the Reading Fightin Phils (33-23), 14-5, in the series finale Sunday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.
The game saw 109 pitches over the first two innings between Binghamton right-hander Gabe Davis and Reading left-hander Adam Seminaris.
The Rumble Ponies took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Center fielder Chris Suero walked and then stole second base for his 34th swiped bag of the year. Left fielder Corey Collins drove him in with an RBI double.
Catcher Kevin Parada followed with a single for his fourth hit over the last two games and it put Collins off third base before first baseman Jamri Baylor delivered a sacrifice fly. One batter later second baseman Mitch Voit tallied an RBI double.
Voit handed in a three RBI night, behind his third three-hit game at the Double-A level and reached base five times.
Reading added one run in the second inning to make it 2-1 First baseman Raider Tello grounded into a double play that scored third baseman Carson DeMartini. The Fightin Phils tied the game one inning later. Right fielder Raylin Herdia singled with two outs against right-hander Cristofer Gomez and designated hitter Alex Binelas followed with a two-run home run.
In the top of the fifth inning Binghamton scored two runs on two hits to take a 5-3 lead. Voit gave the Ponies the lead with one swing, a two-run home run. It was his second Double-A home run and both have come against Reading at FirstEnergy Stadium.
The Fightin Phils tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning against right-hander Bryce Jenkins (W, 4-0) who allowed two unearned runs. With two outs, DeMartini and catcher Caleb Ricketts both singled and then Tello hit a fly ball to center field that Chris Suero misplayed trying to call off the left fielder Collins and it scored two runs.
The Rumble Ponies answered in a big way as they scored nine runs in the seventh and eighth inning combined. In the seventh frame against right-hander Braydon Tucker (L, 7-9) Vargas cashed in an RBI double and third baseman Jefferson Rojas followed with a two-run home run.
Vargas had his second four-hit game this month, as Rojas now has hit a home run in six of his last 10 games. Later in the inning right fielder Eli Serrano III added an RBI double to make it 9-5 Binghamton.
The eighth inning saw every Binghamton hitter come to the plate. Vargas chalked up another RBI double and Rojas followed to do the same. Serrano later in the inning had an RBI single to make it 14-5.
Right-hander Bryce Conley pitched a perfect seventh and eighth inning with three strikeouts out of the bullpen. He followed left-hander Felipe De La Cruz who pitched an inning scoreless and right-hander Brendan Girton who did the same before Jenkins allowed the two runs.
Left-hander Gabby Rodriguez got the ball in the ninth inning and allowed one base runner in a scoreless frame. Binghamton used seven pitchers in the win and six out of the bullpen. All nine hitters for Binghamton reached at least twice in the win.
The Rumble Ponies lost four out of the six games against the Fightin Phils and sit 4.5 games out of first place with 12 games to play in the 2026 second half.
The Rumble Ponies open up a six-game series with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Double-A, Toronto Blue Jays) on Tuesday at Mirabito Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:07 p.m. The game will be broadcast on MiLB.TV News Radio 1290 AM & 92.1 FM, and on the WNBF News Radio App.
