Bowling Green, Kentucky – The Bowling Green White Squirrels (73-33, 26-15) were held in check on Saturday night, falling 6-1 to the Hub City Spartanburgers (49-57, 15-25) at Bowling Green Ballpark in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
The Spartanburgers grabbed the lead with one run in the top of the first inning against starting pitcher Dominic Fritton. A Luke Hanson solo home run to left field gave Hub City an early 1-0 edge.
Hub City extended their lead with four runs in the top of the third against Fritton. Arturo De Freitas singled, Paxton Kling was hit by a pitch, and a Casey Cook base hit loaded the bases. Hanson struck again, hitting a grand slam to left field for a 5-0 Spartanburgers advantage.
The White Squirrels cracked the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the third against Izack Tiger. Bryan Broecker ripped a single, moved to second on a fielding error, and advanced to third on a Jhon Diaz groundout. Tony Santa Maria plated Broecker on an RBI groundout, making it 5-1 Spartanburgers.
The visitors tagged one run in the top of the ninth against reliever Jadon Bercovich. De Freitas logged a base knock, Kling walked, and Hanson lobbed a single into center field for a 6-1 Hub City lead.
Reliever Jesus Gamez hurled a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning, wrapping up a 6-1 final score.
Owen Proksch (2-0) earned the win for Hub City, throwing a shutout inning, walking one and punching out two. Fritton (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits, two walks and seven strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
The Hot Rods and Spartanburgers conclude a six-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM CT. Bowling Green will send LHP Dominic Niman (7-4, 4.19) to the bump against Hub City RHP Enrique Segura (1-3, 6.79).
