BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Thanks in part to a home run from C Daiverson Gutierrez for a second straight game, the Cyclones slugged their way past the Winston-Salem Dash, 8-1, on Thursday night. Gutierrez clobbered a three-run homer in the 1st inning, marking his second consecutive plate appearance with a home run after Wednesday’s walk-off winner.
3B Jacob Reimer also went deep in the victory for Brooklyn, continuing his strong showing on minor league rehab. 1B Chase Meggers went 3-for-4 at the dish with a pair of doubles and an RBI in his High-A debut, while 2B Andy Ibanez put together his third multi-hit game in three games on rehab in Brooklyn. All nine Cyclone starters had at least one hit, while seven of nine scored at least one run.
RHP Emilio Obispo was remarkable in his High-A debut. The 19-year-old kept Dash hitters guessing all night, tossing 4.2 innings of one-hit, one-run ball, while striking out a career-high eight. Obispo retired the first six that he faced, striking out five in a row during that stretch. Meanwhile, the Brooklyn bullpen tossed 4.1 innings of shutout, two-hit ball. Winston-Salem left 11 men on base in their defeat.
Brooklyn batters wasted little time attacking LHP Tommy Vail. After Vail struck out the first batter he faced, Reimer deposited a ball beyond the left field wall to put the ‘Clones in front. After a groundout, DH Randy Guzman walked, and LF Yonatan Henriquez doubled. From there, Gutierrez whacked the second Brooklyn homer of the first inning alone, pushing the lead to 4-0.
One frame later, the ‘Clones added. After SS Colin Houck tripled to start the frame, Meggers drove him in on an RBI single. The frame marked the second straight night Brooklyn sent seven men to the plate, though they settled for just the one run.
The Dash spoiled the shutout in the 5th. Obispo retired the first two, before a walk and hit by pitch promptly ended his night. LHP Gregori Louis came on in relief, and proceeded to issue a pair of walks, the latter of which came with the bases loaded. Still, Louis then registered a strikeout to retire the side.
The Cyclones tacked on some insurance down the stretch. In the 7th, with a runner on second and two outs, RF J.T. Benson came through with an RBI double. Then, one frame later, Brooklyn added two more in the 8th - both with two outs. First, Ibanez laced an RBI single to center, before LF Yonatan Henriquez collected an RBI single of his own, extending the ‘Clones lead to 8-1, which held for the final.
