BROOKLYN, N.Y. - LHP Nicolas Carreño tossed 6.0 brilliant innings, while C Ronald Hernandez provided all of the offense with a grand slam as the Cyclones shutout the Jersey Shore BlueClaws, 4-0, on Tuesday night at Maimonides Park.
After throwing 5.2 hitless innings in his last start, Carreño twirled another gem on Tuesday. The South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week matched a career-high with 6.0 innings, holding Jersey Shore scoreless on three hits and three walks while striking out five.
SS Sammy Stafura excelled in his first home game with the Cyclones. The Cortlandt, NY native reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and made a perfect throw from the left field grass to take a hit away from 3B Robert Phelps.
Stafura is 8-for-20 (.400) in his first five games for the organization he grew up rooting for.
All of the offense in the game came in the 3rd for Brooklyn (22-20, 47-60), cashing in on LHP Cade Obermueller’s lack of command. With the bases loaded after a single, a walk and a hit batter, Hernandez launched a grand slam over the left field fence to put the Cyclones in front, 4-0. The longball was Hernandez’s eighth of the season.
Those four runs were all the Brooklyn pitching staff would need. RHP Calvin Ziegler, LHP Gregori Louis and RHP Parker Carlson closed out the victory, each tossing a hitless innings to secure the victory for the Cyclones.
With the loss, Jersey Shore (14-28, 40-67) dropped their seventh consecutive game.
LF TJayy Walton broke Carreño’s hitless streak at 7.0 innings with a broken-bat single with one out in the 2nd, but the Venezuelan starter worked around the hit and a walk to keep the BlueClaws off the scoreboard.
Despite not producing much offense throughout the night, Jersey Shore did have a trio of players with productive nights at the plate. Walton, CF Griffin Burkholder and C Scott Mudler all reached base twice with a base hit and a walk.
The Cyclones and BlueClaws return to action on Wednesday night. RHP Emilio Obispo (0-0, 4.91 ERA) is expected to make his third start for the Cyclones. Jersey Shore is expected to counter with RHP Cody Bowker (1-1, 3.52). First pitch from Maimonides Park is scheduled for 6:40 P.M.
