BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Despite 7.0 innings of shutout ball from LHP Daviel Hurtado, the Cyclones were bested by the BlueClaws, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Maimonides Park. With the loss, the Cyclones split the six-game set with Jersey Shore.
Hurtado was one of three Brooklyn pitchers to hold Jersey Shore to just one run on only three hits. RHP Parker Carlson and RHP Elwis Mijares each logged a frame of relief work.
Hurtado became the first Brooklyn starter this year to complete 7.0 in a single game this year. With his performance, the southpaw lowered his SAL ERA on the campaign to 2.34.
Brooklyn's pitching was masterful all weekend. Despite the loss, Brooklyn arms limited Jersey Shore to five runs over the final four games of the series.
The Cyclones' only hit of the day came on a two-out double from DHÂ John Spikerman in the fourth inning.Â
Jersey Shore broke the scoreless tie in the 8th, snapping a streak of 20 consecutive scoreless innings over the course of the last few nights. With a man on 3rd and two outs, 3B Romeli Espinosa, making his first start of the week, singled on a ground ball to short that deflected off the pitcher. The throw to first from SS Sammy Stafura got by 1B Ronald Hernandez, so Espinosa tried to take second, but was promptly thrown out on the same play.
The Cyclones did not scratch anything across down the stretch.
Brooklyn returns to action on Tuesday at Asheville. First pitch is set for 6:35, with probable starters to be announced.
