WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - Despite yet another home run from the reigning South Atlantic League Player of the Week DH Yonatan HenrÍquez, the Cyclones were topped by the Renegades, 4-1, in Tuesday night’s series opener. HenrÍquez clubbed his fifth home run over his last five games, raising his total to 10 on the campaign.
In addition to his solo shot, HenrÍquez also scalded a pair of doubles, finishing 3-for-4 on the night, responsible for half of Brooklyn’s six hits.
LHP Nicolas Carreño tossed 5.2 innings of three-run ball, surrendering an earned run for the first time since his start in Brooklyn on July 29. Carreno walked a pair and struck out seven, while allowing four hits.
On a bullpen day for Hudson Valley, Renegades relievers were effective. Five different Renegades relievers held Brooklyn batters in check, as three of the five relievers contributed 2.0 full innings of scoreless ball. Starter RHP Brandon Decker got Hudson Valley with 1.2 innings of shutout ball as the opener. Brooklyn hit into three double plays in the defeat.
Despite the defeat, the ‘Clones cracked the scoreboard first on Henriquez’s solo shot in the 4th.
Hudson Valley immediately pulled even in the bottom of the 4th, courtesy of an RBI single from CF Maika Niu.
One inning later, Hudson Valley took the lead for good, thanks to the first High-a home run for 3B Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek. The former USC Trojan took Carreno deep to put Hudson Valley in front.
The Renegades tacked on some insurance in the 7th. C Daiverson Gutiérrez committed a throwing error on a stolen base attempt to third, as the throw sailed into left enabling the runner to score.
Brooklyn and Hudson Valley return to play on Wednesday night at Heritage Financial Park. RHP Emilio Obispo (0-0, 3.18 ERA) takes the ball for Brooklyn, RHP Luis Serna (6-5, 4.15 ERA). First pitch is slated for 6:35.
